I am trying to put the same layer style to different data columns with
the new symbology (tested 1.8, 1.-268 on windows). I use the graduaded
renderer - The problem is after changing the colunn a new classification
is triggerd so the predefined colors and ranges are dropped.

This is fixed in QGIS master (the soon to be released version 2.0). I
do not believe that this will be fixed in version 1.8. Most developers
currently work on the version 2.0.
