That at least confirms it - the capabilities are then a bit misleading,
if the layer is not meant to be editable.

I just tested here and all I can do is to add a virtual field to the csv,
but not actually write in the file.

Using Qgis 2.18.9 on Windows (OSGeo4W64) I'm trying to import a .csv
file and adding a text field. This is what I do:
1. add the .csv using add vector layer
2. open attribute table then use the field calculator
3. add text field, OK
