Thanks for the help given and after a bit of try and see, I managed to
get qgis v1.8 to red ECW files. The advice given in
http://www.faunalia.com/content/adding-ecw-support-quantum-gis was what
did the trick.

1) from this archive (http://goo.gl/XiG21) copy gdal_ECW_JP2ECW into
C:\OSGeo4W\bin\gdalplugins\1.9 directory.
2) copy all other dll of previous archive in C:\OSGeo4W\bin and
C:\Windows\System32 directories
don't ask me why but it works!
