There are more than one online howto about adding a geometryless table
to a map in QGIS that say to do it as a vector layer; that guidance is
obsolete. "Add Delimited Text Layer" is farther down in the drop-down
list - that's what you want to be using.

Hi Boaz,
Importing CSV files should be supported by QGIS.
I think it would useful to see your CSV file, or at least a part
of it, in order to determine what might be causing problems.
QGIS should also support XLSX files. Have you tried that?
