QGIS does not use java. So that can't be the problem for sure.

Wow! Thank you for such a quick response. I had been using a custom CRS without
the reconfigured WGS84. It left horizontal connecting lines across the page.
I will try reconfigure the WGS84 shape file today though the instructions were
