Yes, I'm refering to the tooltips for the buttons, showing hints of what
the button does.
Already tried googling for qt/ubuntu problems but not find much. The weird
thing is that other qt applications work fine. They show black boxes with
white texts in my system.

(if so I would blame Ubuntu, google "qt tooltips ubuntu 11.04" )?
I'm running 'Master' (formerly, in ancient svn times, called 'Trunk' ;-)
here on Ubuntu 11.10 without problems.

My QGIS does not display tooltips (any more). The only thing that shows
up is a white (or light yellow?) bar at the place where the tooltip
should be. Other QT applications seem to work fine on my system,
including QGIS Browser.
I'm using the "trunk" version:
