I've just had a look inside the "kml" and it doesn't actually have any
GIS data at all; just the URL of the map in Google Maps. This made me
facepalm a little bit. Next step? Track down an actual datafile to try
importing!

I'm using osgeo4w QGIS 1.2 and can open KML okay, though it wasn't exported
from maps. Have you tried KML from another source?
