I can understand this, up to a point, but there must be some validation that could be done perhaps, especially now where we all have (ahem) much faster machines.
My problem was in part caused by my error of having the offset to the menu item status bytes set to zero - surely it would be a simple matter to check that this should not have been the case if I had any rows specified, for example?
Obviously, I'm not asking anyone to do it, but if anyone was making changes in this area, it might be a worthwhile exercise to consider what, if any (other) validation checks there are that might be of some use. A bad parameter return would be better than nothing went wrong?

Thanks. As you may know, I'm using George's Easy PEasy library and there's the SET_AP routine in there that should work. However, I appreciate your comments.
