This won't stop "this kind of attack" because there
is nothing in the nature of this attack that requires
a non-reversed IP. If you're worried about stopping
"this attacker," then use tcprules[1] to block connections
from the attacker's IP (or IP block). I would only do
this after trying
the control chars come from, and
if they are some uncontrollable artifact of transmission, should OE be able
to retrieve the item even though they are present.
If anyone wants to examine this file, I have saved it in its original form
with the control characters and would be happy to send it.

Also, I believe that checkpoppasswd requires that the password in the
popusers file be encrypted.

I installed qmail with the Jedi's checkpoppasswd.
Err...make that RedHat 5.0, not red-hot 5.0 (spellcheckers are great if you
know how to use em.
