pop3 very slow

Help - I'm very new to qmail, and I've read all that I can find on the internet and in the man pages; however, nothing seems to be helping. Problem: It takes 5 minutes to download any messages from the server, which is running qmail 1.03 on a RH 7.0 box. I found an article that suggested the spool file might be too large and be causing this problem -- how do I find and delete this 'spool' file? I've checked all the DNS configs as best I understand and everything there seems fine. Is there something more I'm overlooking -- please help -- any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Joy H.
