That's multilog, not qmail-smtpd. Connect to port 25, then do the ps
again.

from the issue that prompted your query.

I don't understand this. The machine is setup exactly like any other
machine (apparently) but it keeps giving these errors on any incoming
email... What else can I check? Thanks.
