qmailadmin directly to either change the password on the web page, or change this
forwarding mechanism.

be prompted for a new password. Once you change this you should
be able to login as postmaster through the web interface to make changes.
I'm not a qmail expert (at all) but I'm pretty sure this is what you
need to do ;-)

Are you even using vpopmail? Is it installed elsewhere?

running is its presence in /home/vpopmail and this file at /var/qmail/users/assign:
