Sometimes yum trips over things in its cache. Cleaning everything out
seems to unscramble its brain. ;)
To be honest, I think it's probably a bug, but the clean is an effective
work around. You might consider reporting it to the yum developers at
Duke and see what they have to say about it.

I am running the QMT ISO CentOS 5.0. That worked perfectly, all
updated now :)
