Wondering if anybody has found a way to operate devices that are using the
new Bluetooth technology as a remote. I can capture most infrared signals
and operate them through environmental control unit, but the Bluetooth
technology is another beast.

I use my windows 8 notebook from bed with the program IRCommand2 with
the USB-UIRT to operate the smart tv, dvr and blu-ray.
For changing channels I find it easiest to use my cable provider's web page
Xfinity.
Do you have an ipad or iphone? you can control it with one or two switches.

Not sure where you are located but most States have rental programs of
equipment as you have described. You can try it out before you purchase.
Best Wishes
