Thanks E McCann, the pickle, Mark for your help,
Following your advice I checked at a new computer recycler on the Gold
Coast. Surprised to find he had a new looking CD Rom, same vintage as
the 630, so I picked it up for 15 $ Aus. Will get back to office on
Monday and try it.

Will the 630 recognise a CD RW?
I don't have brands or anything, but apparently the 640 (same thing, but
with the DOS card integrated) I have had Toast on it when I got it - so
apparently an external CD-RW was hooked up.
Don't know

What CD Roms can I use in the 630? Any particular specs apart from

Not really :)
Will the 630 recognise a CD RW?
Yep, quite nicely.
Any precautions?
They can be a bit tricky to get out, but they're not too bad.

You are better off, if you want a CD-ROM only, replacing it with
another Apple badged unit. This will ensure maximum compatibility
I have an LC 630 which has given me great service and now I use as a
Fax server. However, the CD Rom has just bought the farm.
