Take your points on what people want or wanted, I would not even try to outdo the mainstream car makers anymore for one huge reason ie safety. Only cars that are leaning towards total performance and track use have a future as far as I would guess. So make an Extreme type vehicle and use somethin

The range rover uses some air springs which might be adapted. The old mercedes touring used the oil system from Citroën to assist normal springs. Then there is the ail/air Citroën system. Of course all would need to be adapted but might give you some ideas when looking down the scrappie :-) .
