I’ll plump for the stat. They don’t seem to last long these days...
Diodes are for working the headlight flaps in the 2+2 and saloon, so that
the flaps open when you flash the lights.
You don't need them if you only want the spot lights to flash (the
headlights will still flash but the flaps won't open).
Flaps will be open when lights are on full beam as
On the saloon there is a mass (lots of wires) earth connection on the A pillar
next to the fuse box. If that gets loose it could explain your problems.
Also check the earth wires at the battery.
