They were both black and both the same radius over the outside (around
55mm) but the original had around a 5mm deep groove while the
replacement had a deeper groove at maybe 10mm.

I've had a similar problem with the clutch on my 2+2 over the years.
My current working solution is to modify the auto adjustment quadrant
to increase the distance from the pivot to the cable, thus increasing
the amount of cable moved when pushing the pedal.

Already had the larger radius quadrant fittedit was the
replacement one (now junked in favour of the original) that resulted
in complete failurewhilst the larger rad one does make the cable
shorter, more importantly, it gives more travel of the cable for a
given pedal movement.
