Went with legacy mode and everything was fine. I'm single booting Qubes on
this machine... This is a testbed machine, not my main laptop, so I'd be
happy to volunteer to test 3.2 UEFI issues on the X220 if that would be of
use.

with efibootmgr the new listing for Qubes ends up looking like this at the
end:
