The first one is easy, probably raster data, not vector and is named RadarDat not RasterDat: myprj-readOGR(dsn=c:/temp/,layer=RasterDat) library(rgdal) myraster - readGDAL(c:/temp/RadarDat.asc) For this one, you don't need system.file()
