I have never done this, so may be missing something obvious, but can
you not use rgdal ? GDAL lists HDF4 as a supported format.

Did you try adding type="source" to the install.packages command? I
don't know why not having it would lead to a segfault, but I still
would have thought you'd need it to avoid it trying to find a binary
package for the Mac (at least, that's my experience on my G5).

R/GDAL/rgdal installation on a Mac, I played a bit more and came
across a glitch when I tried example(readGDAL) on the fresh build.
