bingo. Didn’t think of the plugin, as Safari and Chrome both open pdfs inline
using Preview.app
The Adobe detritus was here if anyone else has this problem.

I fear that it must be a setting on your Mac - the default is to show the PDF
in-ine in the same window (which uses the Preview engine behind the scenes). I

In R.app 3.2.0, doing
?function -> index -> vignettes -> pdf
R.app requests a version of Adobe Reader. I don’t have this installed, but all
OS X users have preview.app
