Just a note in case it's not obvious. Modern C++14, using std::make_shared<T>, can be used with Racket. Mainly due to the make-phantom-bytes call, Racket's GC collects memory at appropriate intervals for my work.
If anyone needs to access std::shared_ptr<X> stuff in Racket, I find that wrapping the shared_ptr in a (return new boost::any(the-thing)) and having a general-purpose (register-finalizer) call handles the C++ destruction and typing of the boost::any content just fine.
