The problem is the ordering of subs in your file.
Your anonymous hook sub should be at the end of the file, after your named
subs, not at the beginning.

When you say LC_LANG, I guess you mean just LANG? Its the LANG environment
variable that we recommend you alter to fix the curious problems with RH9.
I suggest you try using dbish (with the same LANG env variables) to test the
