The other day TuneIn introduced their "Premium" offering. Part of it is
ad-free listening. I was wondering whether TuneIn did introduce this
kind of ad on top of existing streams...

These ads are not put out by the station.
They are local (Geneva) and interrupt the station's broadcast.
I live in the Geneva area and the ads are interrupting some stations
(Bossa Nova Hits, Calm Radio etc.) and are the same kind of ads I get on
local FM stations (in French!).
Hm, I haven't experienced this yet, not in the app nor my Squeezeboxes.
Have to pay attention ...
