My four year old son loves to put his own music using the Controller.
He can't read yet, but he knows to press "House" (home) then turn the
wheel to "Heart" (favorites) and turn the wheel till he sees the right
picture (album cover) then press triangle (play).

I put my daughter's boom where she could reach it to see how she would
do. She is certainly capable of using it herself, but she perfers us to
queue up music for her. I even gave her my wife's iPod to play with at
one point and it was a similar situation.
She can read well enough for the device
Pretty cool isn't it, my daughters (3 and 4) love their Booms as well.
With their favorite music programmed with the preset buttons, they can
operate it themselves.
