My stereotypical image of an "aussie" is someone wearing board shorts, beer

Ian,
By the sounds of your lifestyle, I definitely don't recommend
Brisbane. If you want the best of both worlds (sun and lifestyle)
Sydney is definitely a goer, but you can easily get around to the
sunnier places of Australia for cheap and Sydney beaches aren't that
great. Gold Coast is OK, just
I currently live in Brisbane, and lived in Melbourne before I became a

Brisbane is a great place to live, but there isn't a huge demand for
Rails devs as compared to Melbourne & Sydney if your looking for a

For jobs I have worked in companies recently I have received anywhere
between $25/hr to $75/hr. The low-end of the scale was working on a company
with other people and the upper end was freelancing. Keeping in mind of
course that the $25/hr is basically guaranteed work, where freelancing is

I think you still can get more in the US. I haven't work in the Rails
company though. What's the reason to move to Australia?
