RubyKaigi tickets are now available: http://rubykaigi.doorkeeper.jp/events/2980
RubyKaigi is awesome. You get to hear about Ruby in the birthplace of
the language, and the Japanese Ruby community is amazing.
If you need any more convincing, check out the presentation I gave
last year after Sappor
Hi All,
Has anybody who's been to RubyKaigi (or Tokyo) before got any suggestions on a
semi-decent quality hotel/B&B, closer to central Tokyo than to the conference
itself? Nothing fancy or needlessly pricey, but not budget accommodation for
backpackers.
I'll ask on Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree
Yesterday I realised that Beijing isn't as far from Japan as Melbourne!
Today I booked my ticket and I'm pretty excited! Unfortunately the
party sold out since yesterday so it looks like I'll miss that.
I'm staying at Kimi Ryokan.
Cheers,
Chris

Also I just noticed the Monday of the conference is a public holiday
in Japan, which means I can come, along with all the other shakai-jin.

Thanks for reminding me about this! I completely forgot about
RubyKaigi (in that it was almost here) and though I might have missed
out on a ticket. This time I was wise enough to get a conference party

They're also offering to translate the slides from English to Japanese
and vice-versa before the conference.

It's very accessible.
All the sessions are live-translated; there's someone in the audience with a
laptop who can translate between English and Japanese, and there are extra
projected screens at the stage sides that show an IRC feed of the translation,
as well as tweets tagged with #rubykaigi.
I can't speak for this year, but last year the majority of sessions were either
in Japanese with live English translations on IRC, in English with live
Japanese translations on IRC, or in both English and Japanese. There was decent
contingent from outside Japan, many of whom could speak no Japan
I'd be interested in hearing from you and Andrew as to how accessible it is
as a conference for non-Japanese speakers (in practice, rather than theory).
Can't go this time but would like to plan for next if the language barriers
aren't insurmountable (I've got a clutch of nephews to visit in Japan,
Hi guys,
Anyone here going to RubyKaigi?
I'll be on the Quantas 12 o'clock July 15 flight MEL-SYD, and then on the
21:55 SYD-NRT flight that arrives on Saturday July 16, 6:55. So if you're on
the same one, tell me – I'd be glad to have a semi-familiar face around when
trying to get to RubyKaig
Got you covered there.

As Chris mentioned, I'll be flying in the Friday before Kaigi and leaving late
the following Wednesday night.
I plan on fitting a fair bit of Sake drinking into that time, so I'll probably
need help finding good bars.
Cheers!
