It probably has something to do with polar moment of inertia. Back in the
day, Honda attempted to make their GP race bikes handle better by putting
all of the weight - including the gas tank - as low as possible, and
discovered they were hard to turn. It turned out the bike had a "middle"

Anyone with experience using a Trangia during the winter? I see they
offer a winter kit, which looks like a simple primer for the spirit

Trangia 25 set, and an adapter that will enable an Optimus Nova burner

Very nice ride! Riding to/around Point Reyes is on my future plans...
@Ryan. Having both the Sackville panniers (have only used them for

@Ryan. I have never had any experience with panniers so I cannot compare the
two. I can say that with the Load up High it does NOT affect the handling
that much at all. In my own opinion, with the load up high it is almost an
extension of your own body weight through out the frame and does littl
Well Dawn (me wife) and I made a trip out to Rivendell last week. It was a

I run the Marathon Racers 26x 1.6 on my tandem and really like them a lot.
1.6 should measure 40.5, and mine measure 38, just as a point of reference.
Is there something about the Jack Brown's you don't like? I just bought my

I hear ya about the bumpity-bump. I don't plan on any major mountain biking,
but it IS a country bike, and China Camp IS part of a loop I ride. Riding one
of the calmer trails there is a possibility, which tells me I'm gonna wish I
had mounted that derailer. Thanks for the feedback, folks.

I have Schwalbe Maraton Supreme tires on my Atlantis and my Salsa

I concur. If you ride the bike only on smooth roads you should be fine, but
if you ride on bumpy surfaces you will eventually drop the chain. I run a
single chainring on my 29er MTB and on my cyclocross racing bikes, with
inner and outer chainguards. Without the guards I would drop chains all the

Looks like a great trip, too bad for the rain, but you got to eat a roasted

One more data point: When the pads on my Tektro 720's wore out, I
bought Kool Stop Eagle 2 pads, which are really basic threaded brake
pads. I cut the ends of the pads off with a utility knife (you can
cut about a 1/4 of an each off each end before you hit the piece of
metal inside the pad). The
