Doug, Will is probably leading you in the right direction. Some data points that might help you from my 54 Roadini. Shod with 700X42s, the standover height is 32". I'm 6'0" with a 85 PBH/74cm saddle height. My saddle height gives me 5 inches of seatpost visible, so you'd be down to 2.5".

Since I now own both a Sam and a Roadini (as of last month), the latter is noticeably zippier. The difference I feel in going from a stop to accelerating to a normal cruising speed is palpable. The Roadini just gets there faster and climbs more nimbly. My feelings seem to be supported by data.

Tim, I’ve got the same era Sam but with the tektro r559 brakes. Tire clearance is sufficient for those 44s, but when I’ve run them I haven’t been able to get the tires to pass through the brake calipers fully inflated, so I’d have to finish inflating after getting the tires in place. Not sure
