I have a few bikes, including a Sam Hillborne 650b (51cm) and a Bridgestone
RB-T 700c (53cm). For the kind of riding you describe I mostly ride the
RB-T. I realize this isn't an exact comparison, but I've found 700x35c to
be pretty ideal for pavement and rail trails, and I feel like I would
I've had similar reach issues before, including on my Sam Hillborne. I've
found I like the Soma Hwy One and the Nitto/Blue Lug Fairweather 174 bars.
They both have shorter reach and less drop than the Noodle (I'm guessing
that's what you have?). The drops on the Soma bars come back pretty far and
I have one with an 11-30 cassette and it works well.

I've used the chain in a tube method before, but as a tinkerer I found it
to be kind of a pain if I want to swap saddles, so I have a couple of

Hey Reginald, that was me on the Sam, with Dan on the Trek and Andy on the
Bridgestone T500. It was great meeting you, that Riv Mountain is truly
awesome. It was hot and hilly out there, 64 miles was plenty.

Waterford supplied the decals. When I brought it up, he said "You know, we
probably still have some of those around here somewhere." Was happy to help
them find a use for those old decals before they closed up shop.

Kim, thanks for the tip about the helicopter tape, I hadn't thought about
that. Should probably do what I can to protect this thing.
Michael, the stem is a Soma Sutro. It's 180mm, so in-between standard and
Technomic. I think they look good, the height is right for this sort of

Jason, the route you’ve got there is good. I’d point out it routes to the
north shore channel trail, not the north branch. I’m happy to ride the
original route as planned, or whatever the ride winds up being. I’ve

I don't disagree with anything anyone has said about Navy Pier or the LFT.
Once you hit North Ave it's pretty busy and becomes a different kind of
ride, you're either slowing or dodging. But the location of Navy Pier makes
sense given the mileage goal. And it's more or less a food court, so from
I’ll be on my silver Sam, looking out for other Rivs.

I have one, a '95, that I bought recently and put a few miles on before
taking it apart and sending it off for a repaint at Waterford. It had 650 x
38 Pari-Motos with Tektro 556s. My experience riding it has been limited so
far, but it was a fun ride, no problems that I could see. I think the
I currently have a 1995 Riv Road at Waterford waiting to be repainted also.
Mine was originally the English Light Blue, but I haven't decided whether
to stick with that or go with a different color. Yours looks terrific,
definitely an argument for sticking with that color. Thanks for sharing.
