Cauls are shaped wood pieces, in this case curved to suite the shape of the
chain guard. They go between the steel clamp(s) and the chain guard. They
distribute the forces of the the clamp and protect the chain guard from
being dented by the clamp. Done in this way, the repair will be stronger
It looks fixable with wood glue. It need to clamped and requires shaped
wood cauls.
