On the Amtrak trains in the DC/NYC/Boston corridor you have to take the
front wheel off and hang the bike on a hook. I'm not sure if it's the same
everywhere, but fenders might be more of a problem than a long bike. I can

I have a 1st year Sam (canti brakes, green paint) and I recently noticed
that the rear wheel isn't centered between the chain stays (down by the
kickstand plate). The tire (38mm Marathon) is almost touching the right chain
stay. Everything is centered between the seat stays up by the

VO Left Bank are nice bars. I had them on my Sam for years. I recently switched

I've had one since the first year they made them (2009?) and I still love it.
It's been my commuter, errand runner, day ride, and trail bike. I've toured on
it a bunch too (about 20 days total) and it was great for that. I've always had
upright bars. It really is a great and versitile bike.

Hello all,
Does anyone have experience with ChocoMoose bars on a Sam? I'm wondering if
the grip area sits level or tilts slightly downward. They seem like my ideal
bars, but it's a big investment without being able to test them out. Any

Welcome to the upright world! After I started riding upright bars my B17 was
really uncomfortable. I was sitting in the rivits, it was awful. I switched to
a B67 and now it's like sitting in an easy chair. Good luck!

I’ve had a Sam Hillborne for 11 years and have ridden a Cross Check a bunch of
times. I agree they are functionally very similar, but the way they feel is
night and day. There’s nothing bad about the way the Cross Check feels, but the
S.H. is the most comfortable yet quick bike I’ve ever ridden.
I had them in my Sam for a while. They where great, I only changed them because
I impulsively swap tires. I could not fit fenders with them, btw.

The Wald handlebar clips/struts set up works great. Before I went down the nice
bike rabbit hole, I used that set up on a beater bike for years. You can’t go
nuts with tons of weight in the basket, but that’s true for any set up.

In my experience almost all lower end (cheaper) Shimano parts work really well.
That Altus derailer is great, the standard MTB levers are great, there are
cheap thumb shifters that work great, the cheaper v brakes are great. Splurge
on nice tires and a nice saddle. Go budget with everything else
