I've never worked with the Silvers or the Pauls, but I work on a lot
of older 80's road bikes and often encounter squishy brakes. Are the
levers returning to their position because if not it may be a cable
issue, but it doesn't sound like it. Are your wheels out of true?

I went poking around the archives and couldn't find an answer right
away, so I thought I'd ask the group... I have a Sam with a double
right now that barely clears the chainstay and bought a sugino xd2r
triple off another member of the list and want to know what size BB
i'll need to get? any advi
