What I have confirmed on several Rivendells, when fitting the largest tires
that aren't supposed to fit, is that the Tektro R559s are the limiting
factor on the front. Weinmann / Dia-Comp / Gran-Compe centerpulls will
clear much better (assume this applies to Paul centerpuls also). The other

Any centerpull brake will have improved clearance over your sidepull. Paul
Racers are wonderful, but Dia-Compe/Weinmann centerpulls also work fine
(with good brake pads, like Kool Stops) and are much cheaper.
Have fun on your fatter tires!

Thanks, Joe, I think it's probably relevant. We seem to have preliminarily
determined 48mm as the practical limit with Tektro sidepulls (maybe 50 with a
Racer up front), now I just have to plop down some cash and confirm it for all
future Cheviot searches. Wish me luck!

Totally irrelevant data point:
On my wife's 60cm g1 Cheviot, we recently tried the Schwalbe Big One
29ers (700x60) and they come in 2 notches over the line-- more of a
700x50 practical max.

Whelp, test fitting wheels with discs didn't work, I couldn't slide them all
the way into the frame without interference. So back to Scott's Betty which
shows I should be able to get a 47-48 tire in there. Thanks for all the
thoughts!

Direct dimensional comparison with my Sam wouldn't be too useful to you
since it's a 700C fork and of course a different frame, but one thing
that's true of my bike might be true of yours: The tire clearances are
pretty different front and rear. In my case there's a good deal more room

I was wondering about the Sam comparison, they use the same fork. I also
noticed in Riv's listing for 650b x 48 Big Ben's there's a pic of the mounted
on a Mystery Bike with Tektro R559s like mine.

If those clearances are anything like the sam’s underestimated clearances, you
can easily go 50mm without fenders and depending on the brakes. That being
said, wtb horizons?

It sounds like the Rock ’n Road tire 650b x 43 would be the ticket -

Ya know what happens when you put a dang e-motor on a Cheviot? It gets faster
and heavier, rendering the previously cushy 41.5 Fatty Rumpkins kinda hard and
narrow. I need bigger 650b tires and wonder what others have used. The old
brochure says 45mm without fenders is about the max.
