Actually the mechanical failure turned out to be a mini-blessing. I did have
to get the spoke replaced but that meant I gave my bike a good cleaning
while I was getting the wheel cleaned up. In addition I put on a new rear
tire as the old one was nearing the end of its life. I couldn't quite see

With regards to the quail, they were soaked.
Their little knitted Christmas scarves and hats were wet, but being
wool, were still warm.

Sorry to hear about your mechanical failure.
On my ride, one of my zip ties let me down. I was able to remedy the
failure with a bit of twine, reinforced with bees wax.
