I've been using a helmet that the designers at Specialized gave me several
years ago. It's a nice helmet but it's getting pretty grungy and probably
needs to be replaced. Having only spent about $50 or $60 on helmets in the
past 20 years, I figured it's time to pony up for a new helmet. As
I've had a Giro Aspect for the last couple years that I really like. It's very
light like the racing models but without the fins and bright colors. It is
rather expensive, but they do go on sale quite often.

I'm digging the new Bontrager Lithos MIPS helmet with the accessory port thing
for attaching lights or camera. I just had to replace my Kali helmet due to a
crash (bad one on the trail...broken rib an hurt shoulder). The lithos is more
geared towards mountain biking and covers more of the rear o
Well, I have a huge head so I'm always in trouble finding a good helmet
that fits comfortably. Right now, I'm using the POC OCTAL AVIP MIPS, which
is very pricey but is very light, has more coverage and also protects
against the low impact rotational forces on the brain, responsible for many

On my 4th Bell Metro variant. I like the venting, I like the bill, I'm

I run separate lights on my bike and turn the helmet blinkies on and off
for traffic signals and to get a driver's attention.
I still can't believe how many ligh

MIPS technology does add to safety. I know 2 different MTB riders that hit
trees head on and credited the rational aspect of MIPS with reducing the impact.
POC makes some of the safest helmets out there. Rene, a few other xl sizes (I
need a 62) in the more affordable range are the Bell Transitio
I wanted to like the Brooks helmet as I am a Brooks fan for most of their
offerings. I guess I have an odd shaped head as I always need to try a
helmet on first. It is pretty clear fast which work and which are a no
go. The Brooks was a clear not gonna happen!

Only test I've seen on the subject of replacing your helmet due to age not

I had one head hitting crash that left the faintest of marks on the outer
shell, yet the foam inside was broken through to the shell in 6 places. I hope
helmet makers drop the polystyrene foam and go to something better and longer
lasting like 3D0.

This got me wondering about what would degrade over time and why. All I
could think of is the EPS foam (most of the helmet), the outside shell
(usually thermoformed PET or polyethylene terephthalate) and adhesive or
tape that binds them together. I've seen the shell separate from taped

Does a helmet that breaks absorb more energy from a blow than one that
doesn't?

if it stretches in the process of breaking, it's absorbing the maximum
amount of energy

I have this one too. Just got it about 2 months ago. It replaced a Nutcase
(not the current Metro line) that was too hot. This helmet is quite cool
compared to other helmets and has a classic appeal. So far so good. The
only thing I don't like - the clasp is hard to close compared to the
