I think you are right, the CX70 derailleur cage is very narrow no matter
how much fine tuning I do it still keeps rubbing.
When I picked up my Cheviot at Riv, as per their recommendation I bought
from them the CX70 together with the XD2 double not knowing that I will be
using a 8 speed gea
Yeah I think joe is right, though it should have a small sweet spot with no
rubbing. I used a 10 speed derailleur with a 7 speed cassette/chain and was
able to get into most gears without rubbingswitching to a full 10 speed
drivetrain definitely made things nicer though.

You need an 8-speed front derailer like the Shimano Claris on my Appaloosa. The
CX70 is a narrow 10-speed derailer which probably works ok on 9, too, but I'm
sure it's too narrow for your 8-speed chain.
