Bill, the quick answer is it matters, and exhaling through the nose as well as
inhaling is the best way. The longer answer involves shedding too much CO2,
leaving the blood low in CO2, which is required for proper gascious O2 exchange
at a cellular level, which is why the body attempts to protec

I've started trying to breathe more through my nose. I assume it doesn't
matter whether I exhale through mouth or nose. Is that right?

Patrick, for me the benefit of the Neti pot is that it clears out my nasal
passage so excess "stuff" isn't slowly draining. It also seems to head off
stuffy ears. Generally, it makes me feel better. You'll want to use distilled
or boiled water and a saline solution or it will sting a bit and cou
Patrick,
I use something similar to a nettipot but rather than passively
pouring the solution into your nose, this is a soft squeezable bottle with a
tube that goes to the bottom.
You put it in one nostril and squeeze hard, then do the other nostril the same
way.

Persist with the nose breathing and you will be amazed. It addresses everything
you just described, much of which I had before I shifted to nose breathing all
the time, 24/7.

Well, also, possibly, damage from smoke, cigarette or exhaust. The opaque
black smoke wasn't diesel, either; it was the byproduct of inefficient
combustion of low octane petrol.

With me, the drip is either allergies or native, since I have had it all

and not only when exercising -- which is why the first few miles are always

Roberta and Patrick,
The simple answer is that it is hard to unlearn bad habits, especially when
they are ingrained into the autonomic system of the “need” to breath. What I
learned is that sinus drip, congestion, inflamation, etc, is a symptom of
overbreathing. Breath less, things open up. The
Patrick: I do mean to read your literature on nose breathing, but I have to
say that, trying it today during a gentle bosque ride I found myself so to

short lived. As I say, I'll read the link. Others might be interested, to

Sorry, I over reacted. But to hide behind a pseudonym on a friendly list is
certainly strange, as with someone who, at a gathering, is too shy to

I used a netti pot but after discovering nose breathing and homeopathics, never
needed it again. Previously, I had much of the same chronic issues, which I
thought were alergies, colds, etc. Turns out mostly overbreathing.

I talked to a local pharmacist this afternoon, after a nice dirt ride,
taking it easy in the blustery, low-40s conditions, to avoid the usual
symptom. (Not entirely successfully; have a wee sore throat right now.)
He said that the principal cause is post nasal drip, and that the only

I find using a Neti pot helps with ear nose and throat ailments. My sore
throats are usually related to post nasal drip and a saline rinse helps clear
me out. Absolutely essential for my seasonal allergies too, as it helps rinse
away pollen.

I am very sensitive to sore throats, and even a wee bit of overexertion in
cold weather inevitably leads to a sore throat that, if not immediately
cured, leads to a cold bad enough to keep me from riding.
What do you all do to prevent colds and sore throats in cold weather?
I do keep warm enough;
