Ok thanks for this everyone. At least I can now tell myself I wasn’t
mechanically inadequate. It sounds like Tanpan is the way to go since I’m
already 80% financially committed to this system.

Definitely a case of shifter/derailleur mismatch. You need either the
Microshift Thumbie in black, a 10 speed mountain shifter or a Tanpan
shiftmate. Or - get a new derailleur. Or switch it to friction.
Friction is simplest
Tanpan is lowest barrier to indexing
Microshift Thumbie is most analogou
Over the years, I've had at least three cases of rear derailer misalignment
that fouled up my shifting. Your LBS has the right tool to check for that.

Interesting. That could be it. I bought the derailleur, unused, off this list
or ibob as “xt long cage clutch” or something like that. Probably a mountain
derailleur, So that would maybe make sense. Hmmm
