Don't get me wrong, I was not saying that *I *think you need more than a
40x12. I was saying that a lot of people will tell you that you do. I
think 40x12 is plenty, unless you have to descend at 40mph and insist on
having gearing that allows you to keep up with that.

My Betty has RBW's recommended 26/40 crankset and I still haven't out
pedaled it, much less pedal it on its highest gears on flat ground. Then
again I'm still 40 lbs overweight although working on it. I think I have a
12/34 in the back, but maybe it's 11/34. I'll check.
