Here are some photos of my helmet, which has been through the dishwasher
numerous times. Note the the straps are sparkling clean, all of the decals
(except a little paper sticker that my son’s 3-year-old put on the outside) are
intact, and there’s no apparent damage to the foam.
Would damage to the foam be apparent? Or would it look the same but have
lost it's structural integrity? If I wore a helmet, I wouldn't want it to
look fine and function poorly.

When the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute tested various household chemicals for
their effects on helmets, they did a pretty basic visual inspection:
