I've been using the Ursus Center Stand (sold by Ahearne Cycles 
at http://www.ahearnecycles.com/ursus-center-stand/)  for about a year and 
a half on my commuter/errand bike. Alistair Spence recommended it on the 
Boblist -- I'd previously used the Esge/Pletscher and the VO stands, and 
found both a bit wanting -- not as stable as i'd like, and in the case of 
the VO, my big feet hit the ends. 

The Ursus is not cheap, but it is, IMHO, by far the best center stand I've 
ever used. It is really beefy, deploys to about an 18" stance which is 
really stable, and seems to have oodles of both tire and heel clearance. I 
think it is well worth considering.
