Jeremy,
Thanks for the info. I thought before that it was the brakes that limit the
choice of wider tires.

Tim,
I owned a first generation Riv...Road, Waterford built. It was a 59.5. I
could run the Pasela "35" but, these bikes were built when the actual tire
size was quite a bit less than the label stated. The old "35" Paselas
measured about 31~32. It fit the frame and was the limit, without fenders
I just read the Riv Reader (thanks!) and answered my own question. Queue
epic tension building music. "In a world ruled by engineers, who decides if
the size of the tire is based on the rim or the outer diameter of the tire?
No one. Such things do not matter to engineers and they rule the world.
In what world is 603 between 650 and 700? How do these things get
measured/named? How's a eegit like me supposed to play along? Gadzooks.
With abandon,

Hey Tim,
This may be more than you were asking for, and I'm not even sure Rivendell
ever got anything going on it, but in years yonder Grant talked about
brining to market some 603 rims/tires. This size is/was smack dab in the
middle between 650b and 700. Can't remember off the top of my head
Thanks for all the advice, folks!
I'm not committed to fatter tires; I really like the 28's I have on there
compared to the 23's on my last bike. So, I figured I'd like another size
up at least as much. And Catalogue #3 says that the Road Standard will
take up to a 35 so I figured there had to b
To echo what jim and joe said and hopefully add a bit more clarity:
Tire/Fender clearance is determined primarily by the frame, not only in how
much room there is around the wheel but also in the distance between the
brake hole and the braking surface of the rim, which is called "brake
reach."
I don't think there's much to be done about stuffing bigger tires into a
frame designed for 700c wheels and short-reach brakes. The trick is to
reduce the diameter of the wheel and add longer brakes, hence the 650b
conversion trend Grant started.

It's hard to imagine that different brakes will allow you too fit 35 mm tires.
Unlike the Ram this bike was designed around the short reach brakes that were
the usual thing back then. Tektro does make short reach brakes, which may have
slightly more vertical clearance. But even then, you don't h
Oh and the catalog for the Rambouillet says they should fit 38s. Ha!
