I've experienced the aggression you're referring to in the east bay hills. I don't have any answer to you other than I suffer through it as well. Still, the cars don't really slow me down much. If they're going very slow or stop I can almost always slip right by. And yes, when I'm climbing with

My riding situation is urban-ish. I live carless, and have for many years. I hate cars. My wife was killed in a car wreck, then there are the drunk drivers, global warming etc. Since dumping cars, the quality of my life went up. The miles I put on my Atlantis vary, as I don't ride, unless I

*That* part doesn't bother/surprise me at all; I know lots of people who do that. The Bay Area is a big area geographically (about 60 miles east -west, about 120 miles north-south), but most people who live here don't go everywhere all the time. They go to the places they already know. I've

I'm very curious how you manage to get 2 children to school and to extra-curricular events sans auto. I know Kent Peterson (of blog and Great Divide and long distance fixed gear riding) did so. I drive between 4 and 5k miles a year, of which less than 1 K is for myself, when I need to load up at

I understand what you mean, but in order to ensure logical consistency: Unless you live on the ridgeline, way out in the sticks (La Honda maybe, or Sunol), or you have access to some invisible road system that the rest of us Bay Area riders don't have, traffic and parking are daily issues for

My Mon-Fri commute is about 8km each way from the west side of downtown into the city core. It gets progressively more and more dense and crowded as I go - tolerable on good days, hellish on bad ones. It is 100% on city streets that include unseparated bike lanes, sharrows and nothing at all.

I live car-lite in an inner ring suburb, so I have convenient access to shopping centers (super market, Target) and a down town. Many of my destinations are within two or three miles, so the miles don't really add up, it's more the number of trips that I can take by bike. On a typical day I'll
