Thanks all for the feedback. If I can find a new head for one of the pumps
that I have, that should fix the "grip" problem. If not, then I think I'll
just swap out the tubes for ones that have threaded stems. Sheesh!

I use latex tubes in 3/5 bikes, and they have slick valve stems. I push
them to the side to put on a pump head, but again, because of the way a
Hirame pump head works, it goes on with no friction.

That type stem is common on road tubes mostly with long stems . If using an
older pump with a worn fitting it might have trouble gripping the stem and
leaking while pumping.
If you prefer threaded just exchange them out with a tube with a threaded
stem.

I can't help you, as my daughters inflated theirs without incident. Our
shop pump is as a Blackburn Air Tower 1 (which has been replaced under the
lifetime warranty a few times, great customer service!). But I also checked
their valve stem and it is the usual threaded I"m used to seeing, so not
