No FD at the moment. I managed to get the cable crimped in my elevator door
and decided to take the FD off for a while.
I had a Shimano Tiagra FD4503 9spd Triple on there before that . Worked
fine.

The cassette is a 12-36 9 speed. It all works fine together, but I'd probably
just put a 34t ring on the front and be done with it if I were doing it over
again.

I've got a 40/26 on my 56 single top tube Sam. I had been running it with a
wide range (11/34) 9 speed cassette and bar end shifters, which worked fine.
That set up gave me nearly the same range as the triple it replaced, with
almost no need to shift up front.
