Another piece often overlooked is acclimating to the cold. It is
P'burgh winters are probably way worse than here in MD.
Here in MD I get away with:
2 wool layers and J jacket or 4-5 layers of wool and no jacket.
Couple hats.
2 layers of tights (one Ibex wool, one Boure windstopper type) or pair up
some heavyweight wool long johns and MUSA long pants.

I'll second the benefit of investment in cold/wet weather vestments. While
not nearly the extreme s of Patrick's ventures, mine have become sort of
mundane and my shell layers have stopped representing disappointment by
year two or three's use.

I live in Maryland and told my wife if we ever move, the new house must be
somewhere south of where our home is now. The closer to the equator the
