I too rode my bike home when I was laid off in 2008. Not a Rivendell, but an RB1. They were not as nice though, no one offered me a cab ride home, even though it was a 22 mile ride. In my case I hated working there, so was happy to be gone. It did take a while to find a job I liked (and still
