Here are some pictures of the situation. One shows the bag in its current
dangling position; this works, I've used it like this for years on other
bikes. The other shows the approximate bag position I would like to
achieve with a rack. The lower front corner of the bag is about 2" above
and
It could be that the Erlen rack they have at A1 Cyclery is not the size you
need but I wanted to put it out there. It looks like Chris also has a
couple of the larger Bagman racks.

Thanks for the tip about the Erlen. It looks like that would fit this bag,
where the Carradice Bagman rack wouldn't.

Ocean Air cycles sells the
Erlen Saddle Bag Support rack.
Unfortunately sold out for now, a Tubus Fly would work as well as your
other choices.

I have the Nitto R-10, and was able to use the seat stay rack mounts on my
XL frame (Salsa Marrakesh).

That's a really nice bag. I have a medium Nitto Big Rear Rack for sale around
here somewhere. Asking $160 shipped, but I'm easily talked down on parts sales.

I think the correct rack (or bag support thing) will be driven by the
distance between the seat loops and the desired bottom of the bag. Where
is that plane compared to the upper rack eyelet level? Also think about
how close the bag bottom should be to the seatpost and if you'll have rub
on
HaHA! Yes, this is a tweed one. It's sort of a mediocre bag compared to
what is out there today such as the Acorns or Sackvilles, etc, but's it the
bag I have, it works fine for what I need, and I still love the look of
it. But I think it would look better supported by a rack, along these
One word... TWEED.

Sackvilles come with stiffner, even better.
You could get a pretty penny for the Smythe to help fund the Sackville, too.
Just an idea. Thinking outside the box. Why have weight of s rack unless really
needed? And the I don’t think the Nittos are rated for any heavy weights anyway.
Of course, I
Are the Smythe bags waterproof like Sackvilles?
I thought I heard they are not. If that is true, why not get a Sackville? They
don’t need a rack (so less weight/less failure points) and you can put a
coroplast stiffner on the bottom to keep it flat.

There is also the Nitto R-10, if you don't mind attaching to your seatpost.
It allows the rack to snug up a little higher if you have lots of seat post
exposed. It requires mid-seat-stay mounting points and doesn't have a
taillight mount. It also doesn't have to sit level, which might be an
The R-14 is highly adjustable & the later ones are flat (no tombstone). It
looks good & has a tail light mounting plate. A rack a bit bigger than you
need for the bag is not a bad idea as it lets you strap on something if you
need more carrying capacity. Yoga mats, shoes, wet jackets, etc.
It appears Alex's Cycle in Japan has them in stock. It says $112 converted
and shipping to my area in Ohio, for example, about $22. Of course, they have
lots of other cool stuff to add to that order !
